AfD Overtakes CDU in Polls for First Time: 28% vs 24% — Coalition Survival Doubted
An INSA poll published the week of May 4 showed the AfD at 28% — ahead of the CDU at 24% — for the first time in German polling history. The SPD stood at 13.5%. Three-quarters of respondents said the Merz coalition government was failing, and 58% predicted it would not survive until 2029. The poll reflected deep public discontent with both the CDU-SPD coalition's welfare reform disputes and the Merz government's handling of the US troop withdrawal crisis. The AfD's new polling lead came despite the Constitutional Court's ongoing proceedings regarding the domestic intelligence agency's 'extremist' classification of the party.
