Seven UN Security Council Members Condemn Russia's Occupation on 2008 War Anniversary
Latvia, Denmark, France, Greece, the UK, Austria and Portugal issued a joint UN Security Council statement marking the 18th anniversary of the August 2008 Russo-Georgian war, condemning Russia's 'brutal invasion and continued illegal military presence' and citing unlawful detentions, restrictions on freedom of movement, discrimination against ethnic Georgians, and the killings of Giga Otkhozoria and Archil Tatunashvili. The statement called on Russia to implement the 2008 ceasefire agreement, withdraw its forces, and allow international human-rights monitors access to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
