Newsom Signs SB 925 Directing California Fusion Energy Strategic Plan
On September 30, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Sen. Jerry McNerney's SB 925 at UC Berkeley, requiring the California Energy Commission to develop a strategic plan to advance fusion energy: expanding R&D, identifying potential power plant sites, and creating licensing, certification and environmental-review pathways. The bill was sponsored by General Atomics. The governor's announcement also included a $30 million investment for quantum and fusion research. Companion bill AB 2647 requires an assessment of advanced nuclear technologies by January 1, 2028.
