Fall of the Bastille — Revolution Begins
Parisian crowds storm the Bastille fortress-prison, a symbol of royal tyranny, killing its governor and releasing seven prisoners. The day marks the irreversible outbreak of the French Revolution and is now celebrated as France's national day (Bastille Day). The storming follows the dismissal of the popular finance minister Necker and the gathering of royal troops around Paris.
