European Parliament Gives Final Approval to EU-US 'Turnberry' Trade Deal

Meeting in plenary in Strasbourg, the European Parliament overwhelmingly approved the legislation implementing the 2025 EU-US 'Turnberry' framework agreement, voting 440-151 with 50 abstentions on the main regulation eliminating EU tariffs on US industrial goods and granting preferential access for US agricultural and seafood products (including a separate 444-152 vote on a US lobster tariff exemption). The deal locks in a 15% ceiling on US tariffs for most EU exports (cars, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors), down from the 30% Donald Trump had threatened, but includes suspension, sunrise and sunset safeguard clauses the EU can trigger if Washington fails to comply. INTA Committee chair Bernd Lange called it a 'big democratic majority' behind the package. The Council of the EU formally adopted the regulation on June 25, just ahead of Trump's July 4 deadline; full US compliance (including fixing steel/aluminium duties) is required by December 31, 2026.
