Egypt Calls Nile Water Security 'Existential,' Rejects Ethiopia's Unilateral GERD Moves
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty declared that the Nile water issue is an 'existential' matter for Egypt, warning that Cairo rejects any unilateral steps by Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) that could threaten downstream interests. Abdelatty said Ethiopia has continued operating the dam without prior coordination or a legally binding agreement with Egypt and Sudan, accusing Addis Ababa of disregarding international law governing shared rivers. He added that 'Ethiopia has the right to development, and we have the right to life,' and said unilateral decisions on transboundary rivers are impermissible under international law. Egyptian officials also said Ethiopia's continued water retention had reduced downstream Blue Nile levels in Sudan. The statement, first reported July 21, deepened an impasse that Abdelatty had already flagged in late June 2026, with no binding trilateral agreement between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in sight.
