EU Confirms €4 Billion Macro-Financial Assistance Disbursement to Egypt

| Egypt

The European Union confirmed in early June 2026 the disbursement of €4 billion in macro-financial assistance (MFA) to Egypt — the largest and final tranche of a €5 billion MFA package agreed as part of the broader EU-Egypt Strategic Partnership (2024). The first €1 billion tranche had been disbursed in January 2026. The June payout finalizes the loan component, which is part of a landmark €7.4 billion total EU-Egypt package comprising: €5 billion in concessional loans, €1.8 billion in private investment facilitation, and €600 million in grants. The package was originally secured in March 2024 alongside Egypt's $8 billion IMF Extended Fund Facility, and was designed to support Egypt's balance-of-payments stabilization, green energy transition, and economic diversification. Egypt's external financing needs had been elevated since the 2023 EGP devaluations and the Suez Canal revenue losses from Houthi disruptions. EU officials cited Egypt's 'central role in Mediterranean security and Gaza mediation' as justification for the strategic scale of the package.
