Grand Egyptian Museum Opens Fully After Two Decades of Construction
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened fully to the public on April 26, 2026, following 22 years of construction, pandemic delays, and phased soft openings. The $1 billion museum adjacent to the Giza pyramids is the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, housing over 100,000 artifacts. The opening is anchored by the complete 5,398-piece Tutankhamun collection — displayed in its entirety in public for the first time — and is projected to accelerate Egypt's 2026 tourism surge toward a target of 21 million annual visitors.
