WHO and UNMISS Launch 10-Day Ebola Preparedness Mission at South Sudan Border Town of Ezo

A World Health Organization team, supported by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), traveled from Yambio to Ezo in Western Equatoria State on a 10-day mission to assess preparedness, strengthen screening, and support frontline health workers at the main DRC-South Sudan border crossing, UNMISS reported 27 August 2026. Health workers are screening travelers entering and leaving South Sudan and combining it with community sensitization via radio and social media, while UNMISS military observers assess the security of screening centers. Local authorities identified three major crossing routes into DRC, of which only one is currently monitored. The mission comes as DRC's outbreak — now over 5,700 confirmed cases — has moved geographically closer to the border, and a recalibrated Lancet Infectious Diseases modelling study put South Sudan's Ebola importation probability at roughly 69.3%, nearly double an earlier estimate. No Ebola cases have been confirmed in South Sudan.
