OCDH: Nearly 1,949 Repressive Actions Recorded in Cuba in First Half of 2026
The Madrid-based Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) released its semi-annual report documenting 1,949 repressive actions in Cuba between January and June 2026, including 257 arbitrary detentions, 488 unlawful home confinements, and at least 50 documented instances of direct violence against detainees. Independent journalists were targeted in 91 incidents, and June alone accounted for 299 repressive actions — the report's release coincided with the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021 protests. High-profile cases cited include journalist Henry Constantín and content creator Eddy Ceballos. OCDH stated "the Cuban regime continues its repression against the populace and has no intention of enacting political or human rights changes," linking a wave of recent local demonstrations to worsening blackouts and food shortages.
