Cuba's June Protest Wave Peaks at 31 Demonstrations in a Single Day

Cuba recorded its single largest day of unrest of the crisis so far, with 31 separate demonstrations nationwide, part of a record 253 protests documented across June — nearly double the previous monthly high. The human rights group Cubalex later reported 319 repression incidents and 608 harassment incidents for the month, with Havana accounting for 176 protests and Santiago de Cuba 35. Demonstrators banged pots, burned tires for barricades, and chanted "Freedom" and "Intervention now" as blackouts stretching past 72 hours and an informal exchange rate near 670 CUP/$1 fueled anger. Cubalex said 52 arbitrary-detention events affected more than 95 people during the month, and political prisoners reached 1,306 by June's end.
