Prime Medicine Wins First-Ever Clinical Clearance for a Prime Editing Therapy

New Zealand's Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority cleared Prime Medicine's Clinical Trial Application for PM577a, targeting the ATP7B H1069Q allele responsible for roughly 30–50% of Wilson disease cases in the US and Europe. The clearance is the first-ever human clinical authorization for an in vivo prime editing therapy, enabling a global Phase 1/2 study in adults and adolescents to begin in the second half of 2026, with initial data expected in 2027. Prime Medicine called it a major de-risking event for prime editing as a therapeutic modality distinct from CRISPR-Cas9 and base editing.
