Scientists Detect Omicron Variant in South Africa
South African scientists identify B.1.1.529, a variant with an unprecedented number of mutations in its spike protein — over 30. The variant is found in specimens from November 9 onward in Gauteng Province. WHO designates it a Variant of Concern on November 26, naming it Omicron — the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.
