Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe reached their highest-ever Q1 market share of 19% in early 2026, with March 2026 being the continent's strongest single month for BEV registrations on record, according to ICCT data published April 30. France led Q1 growth with +50% YoY in BEV sales, Germany +41%. Austria, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain also posted record BEV months. Individual model highlights included the Skoda Elroq (11,672 units, +146% YoY), Renault Alpine A290 (9,888 units), and Mercedes CLA EV (6,942 units). Globally, Q1 2026 EV sales totaled 4 million units — matching full-year figures from just a few years earlier. The surge was driven by 30+ new BEV models entering the European market in Q1 2026 at more accessible price points (€20,000–30,000), opening the market beyond premium segments. BloombergNEF notes that EV manufacturing scale and LFP battery adoption are now consistently delivering entry-level models below the psychological €25,000 threshold, with mass-market price parity expected in Europe by 2027–2028.
