Chinese Humanoid Robot Breaks Human Half-Marathon World Record in Beijing
A humanoid robot named 'Lightning', developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, completed the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon on April 19, 2026 in 50 minutes and 26 seconds — breaking the existing human world record by over six minutes. The bipedal robot stands 169cm tall and was equipped with a liquid-cooling system to sustain performance over the 21km course. The 2026 edition drew over 100 competing robot teams, nearly five times more participants than the inaugural 2025 event, and the top robot's time was nearly three times faster than the previous year's best robotic performance. The race demonstrated rapid iteration in China's humanoid robotics industry: dynamic balance algorithms, real-time terrain adaptation, and multi-hour endurance now commercially available from domestic firms. The event underscored China's strategic push in robotics as a key pillar of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which targets integration of humanoid robots in manufacturing, logistics, and elder care. Spirit AI, whose robots also competed, raised $145M Series B in April 2026 at a $1.4B valuation, reflecting intense investor interest in Chinese humanoid robotics following the Boston Dynamics-competitive demonstrations.
