Huawei Launches Ascend 950PR — ByteDance and Alibaba Place First Orders
Huawei unveiled the Ascend 950PR AI chip, its most advanced inference accelerator, with ByteDance and Alibaba immediately placing substantial orders following successful testing. The 950PR improves CUDA ecosystem compatibility — removing the primary adoption barrier that had limited Huawei chip uptake at Chinese hyperscalers with existing CUDA-based model pipelines. Huawei plans to ship approximately 750,000 units in 2026, with mass production from April and volume deliveries in H2 2026. Pricing starts at approximately 50,000 yuan ($6,900). The launch marks a critical milestone in China's domestic AI compute transition: Chinese hyperscalers that previously resisted migrating from Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem can now deploy Huawei chips without full software stack rewrites. Each 950PR delivers inference performance estimated at 70-80% of an Nvidia H100, up from ~60% for the Ascend 910C, narrowing the gap at a time when Nvidia access is fully restricted.
