SMIC Added to US Entity List — China's Top Chipmaker Sanctioned
The US Commerce Department adds Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China's largest chipmaker, to the Entity List, citing its 'military end use' risk. US companies must now obtain licenses — unlikely to be granted — to supply SMIC with equipment for chips at 10nm or more advanced nodes. SMIC loses access to cutting-edge EUV machines from ASML and advanced process equipment from Applied Materials.
