Senators File Replacement Security Reform After Kast Withdraws His Own

|Chile

The government withdrew its constitutional security reform on the night of October 6 (Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado: 'we will not persevere'). On October 7 senators Longton (RN), Squella (Republicano), Bianchi, Flores (DC) and Araya (PPD) filed a replacement text, which the executive decided to back. It treats organized crime as a constitutional-level threat, segregates the prison population, and caps a state of exception at an initial 30 days, with extensions needing congressional approval, presidential reports every 15 days and a power for Congress to revoke it. It needs 29 Senate votes (4/7).
