Kast Rules Out Official September 11 Ceremony and Symbolic Pardons, Breaking with Every Government Since 1990

In an August 31, 2026 interview with Radio Cooperativa, President José Antonio Kast confirmed he would hold no official government act for either September 4 or September 11 — the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 coup — saying he would instead be 'deployed in regions' doing routine work: 'Voy a trabajar, igual que el 4 de septiembre' (I'll work, just like September 4). Asked directly whether there would be any commemorative ceremony at La Moneda, Kast answered 'No, ninguno' (No, none), leaving only the possibility that the palace's routine Friday morning mass could be 'intentioned' for the date if requested. Kast also explicitly ruled out announcing any symbolic pardons on September 11, answering simply 'no' when asked. The decision breaks with the practice of every Chilean government since the return to democracy in 1990, each of which held some form of official commemoration.
