New Safe Confinement Arch Slid Into Place

| Chernobyl

On November 29, 2016, the New Safe Confinement arch is successfully slid 327 metres on hydraulic rails to cover the original sarcophagus. The operation takes 15 days. The NSC is designed to last at least 100 years, providing a safe enclosure for the dismantlement of the original sarcophagus and eventually the reactor itself. The NSC is the largest movable structure ever built. A ceremony marking its completion is attended by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and EBRD President Chakrabarti.
