Kyiv May Day Parade Held Despite Contamination
Soviet authorities order the traditional May Day parade to proceed in Kyiv — just 130 km south of Chernobyl — despite elevated radiation levels in the city. Children and parents march through contaminated air while Communist Party leaders watch from the reviewing stand. Officials later acknowledge this decision was intended to prevent panic and maintain the appearance of Soviet normality. Ukrainian doctors who warned against the parade were overruled. It became a defining symbol of the Soviet cover-up.
