Burning Graphite Ejected onto Roof
The explosions hurl burning fragments of the reactor core — including highly radioactive graphite moderator blocks — onto the roofs of adjacent buildings. Approximately 3.5% of the reactor's radioactive inventory is ejected directly into the atmosphere. Fires ignite on the rooftops of the turbine hall and other buildings, creating an extremely hazardous environment for first responders.
