Spain Declassifies 40 Intelligence Documents Showing Advance Warnings of Mass Crossing

|Ceuta / Schengen Crisis

Spain's government declassifies 40 intelligence files and communications produced by the National Police, Civil Guard, the CNI (National Intelligence Center) and Armed Forces Intelligence (CIFAS). Among them, a July 29 CNI note to Moroccan intelligence flagged Facebook and WhatsApp groups promoting a mass attempt to enter Ceuta the next day by swimming or via the border fence, potentially exploiting Morocco's Throne Day celebrations. The trove appears to undermine PM Pedro Sánchez's earlier framing of the crisis as unforeseeable; Sánchez responds that 'the existence of this campaign was known ... but in no way did it constitute or could it be interpreted as an indicator of the scale, nature, or probability of what happened afterward.'
