CDMX Launches Mandatory Registry for Airbnb and Booking Hosts Ahead of World Cup
Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada formally launched the Sistema de Registro Digital de Anfitriones y Plataformas de Alojamiento Temporal on May 22 — a mandatory government registry requiring all properties listed on Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia, and similar platforms to register within 30 days. The system is estimated to cover 30,000+ temporary rental properties concentrated in central neighborhoods including Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Juárez, and the Historic Center. Hosts operating four or more properties must register under a commercial entity classification, distinguishing them from individuals who occasionally rent a single home. Required registration data includes business name, property addresses, civil liability insurance, tax ID, and a complaints contact. Brugada stated the initiative aims to 'guarantee compliance with tourism law, provide legal security and prevent speculative practices affecting housing rights,' with special focus on preventing price gouging during the 2026 World Cup. Enforcement mechanisms include a dedicated legal team, a consumer complaints window, and a partnership with the federal consumer protection agency PROFECO to monitor violations. The measure advances Brugada's broader anti-gentrification agenda: her constitutional amendment capping annual rent increases at inflation is pending the September 2026 legislative period, as the CDMX Congress does not convene in plenary until after the World Cup.
