Ganfeng Lithium Begins Small-Batch Production of 500 Wh/kg Solid-State Battery — World First at This Production Stage
Ganfeng Lithium, China's largest lithium producer and a significant battery manufacturer, announced on May 21, 2026 that it has commenced small-batch production of a 500 Wh/kg-class lithium-metal solid-state battery — representing the first instance globally of a cell in this energy density class reaching the production stage, however small in scale. Ganfeng's 400 Wh/kg variant has already completed engineering validation across more than 1,100 charge-discharge cycles, demonstrating durability approaching commercial thresholds. The company targets premium EV powertrains, eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, commercial drones, and humanoid robotics as primary applications for the technology. The 500 Wh/kg figure is more than double the energy density of commercial LFP cells (~160–180 Wh/kg at pack level) and meaningfully exceeds the best current NMC production cells (~300–350 Wh/kg). Ganfeng's announcement comes days after Ganfeng Solid State had already confirmed a 400 Wh/kg cell in engineering validation, making this an escalation of their solid-state timeline. Analysts note that 'small-batch production' in Chinese industry parlance typically refers to dozens to hundreds of cells per day — not true mass production — but the transition from lab to any production marks a significant milestone in solid-state commercialization. The move intensifies the race between Ganfeng, CATL, BYD, Toyota, Samsung SDI, and QuantumScape to be first to high-volume solid-state cell production.
