BYD Overtakes Tesla as World's Top Grid Battery Storage Deployer in 2025

| Battery Revolution

Research firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence reported on May 13, 2026 that BYD shipped over 60 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) globally in 2025 — overtaking Tesla (46.7 GWh) as the world's leading grid storage integrator. BYD's 14.5 MWh HaoHan system, nearly three times the energy capacity of a single Tesla Megapack, combined with BYD's deep vertical integration across cells, packs, and power conversion systems, drove the shift. BYD has aggressively priced its grid storage systems in international markets, winning contracts in the UK, Germany, Australia, the Middle East, and across Asia-Pacific. Tesla, while still the leading grid storage company by brand recognition in Western markets, has faced margin pressure from Chinese competition and supply chain adjustments following its global gigafactory expansion. The overtake marks a structural shift in the global grid storage market: while Tesla pioneered utility-scale battery storage with the Hornsdale Power Reserve in 2017, Chinese manufacturers now command the largest deployment volumes. BYD's grid storage growth partially offsets softening passenger EV sales, making BESS a strategically important revenue stream for the company.
