BYD Upgrades Top-Selling EVs with 5-Minute Flash Charging Capability

| Battery Revolution

BYD announced on May 11, 2026 that its best-selling EV models would be upgraded with a new 5-minute flash charging capability and improved range approaching 400 miles (approximately 640 km). The upgrade follows BYD's development of a next-generation blade battery with higher silicon content in the anode and improvements to the battery management system (BMS) enabling sustained high-rate charging without thermal runaway risk. BYD's 5-minute charge milestone — adding significant usable range in the time it takes to pay for fuel — directly challenges CATL's Shenxing Plus 4C/5C cells and positions BYD as a credible competitor in the fast-charging performance segment. The announcement coincides with BYD's April 2026 NEV sales of 321,123 units (+7% MoM), though the company has seen 8 consecutive months of YoY passenger EV decline as the Chinese market enters a more competitive equilibrium. The fast-charging capability is expected to help BYD target European consumers, where range anxiety and charging speed remain primary EV adoption barriers.
