Gateway's HALO Module Repurposed Into Three Lunar Infrastructure Demo Missions; Canada Redirects Canadarm3

Following the March 2026 cancellation of the Lunar Gateway as a stepping-stone architecture, NASA and Northrop Grumman announced the cancelled HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) module — which had absorbed roughly $1.9B in contract value since its 2019 award — will be converted into three Lunar Infrastructure Demo (LID-1/2/3) missions reusing HALO-derived power, thermal, autonomy and communications hardware to mature systems that can survive the lunar night near the South Pole, feeding directly into Moon Base Phase I (through 2029). The same day, the Canadian Space Agency announced it would repurpose its Canadarm3 robotic-arm investment — built on 25 years of Canadarm2 ISS heritage — for Artemis lunar surface operations and potential commercial LEO stations rather than the cancelled Gateway.
