Artemis III Crew Reveal 9 Days Away — IFT-12 Investigation Active; Artemis II Crew on Day 51; Orion Heat Shield Analysis Progressing

| Artemis II

As of May 31, 2026, the NASA Artemis program enters the final 9-day countdown before the Artemis III crew announcement scheduled for June 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. EDT at Johnson Space Center, Houston. The event will be broadcast live on NASA+, NASA TV, and YouTube. The four astronauts selected for Artemis III — the redesignated Earth-orbit rendezvous and docking demonstration targeting late 2027 — will be publicly named for the first time. Artemis III will fly with a structural spacer in place of the ICPS upper stage (the sole remaining ICPS reserved for Artemis IV); NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is fabricating the barrel and ring components. The Artemis II crew — Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen — are on Day 51 post-splashdown at Johnson Space Center, continuing post-flight reconditioning and medical evaluations. The FAA's mishap investigation into Starship IFT-12's Booster 19 boostback burn failure (May 22) remains open; SpaceX is conducting the investigation with FAA oversight and must submit a corrective-action report before IFT-13 (Ship 40 + Booster 20) can receive a flight license. Analysts project return-to-flight no earlier than July–August 2026. The orbital propellant transfer demonstration — required for Artemis III HLS qualification — has slipped from its June 2026 target to Q3-Q4 2026 at the earliest. At Kennedy Space Center, the Artemis II Orion capsule continues de-servicing at the Multi-Payload Processing Facility; the heat shield is expected to be shipped to Marshall Space Flight Center this summer for formal X-ray scans, approximately 2,000 CFD simulation validation runs, and Avcoat sample extractions that will determine Artemis IV crewed landing readiness.
