Microsoft's Third Annual AI in Education Report: 92% of Students and Leaders Have Used AI for School, But Training Lags Adoption

Microsoft published the third edition of its annual AI in Education Report on June 24, 2026, based on a PSB Insights survey of 3,345 students, educators, and education leaders across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. The report found 92% of students and education leaders and 88% of educators have used AI for school-related purposes, with 58% of education leaders saying their institutions are already implementing or scaling AI tools. Usage is accelerating: 78% of leaders, 76% of educators, and 65% of students reported increased AI use over the past year. However, the report identified a widening support gap — 77% of students and 53% of educators have received no formal AI training, and 66% of educators and 52% of students want monthly or quarterly training from their institutions. Academic integrity remains the top concern, cited by 41% of students and 42% of educators. Alongside the report, Microsoft announced a new wave of free AI-powered Copilot teaching and learning tools for Microsoft 365 Education, timed ahead of the ISTELive 26 conference, built with educator feedback and additional safeguards for K-12 classrooms.
