IED Blast in Wana Bazaar Kills Ahmadzai Wazir Tribal Chief Malik Tariq Wazir — Day 82 of Op Ghazab

May 18, 2026 (Day 82 of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq): An improvised explosive device (IED) planted by unidentified militants detonated in Wana's Rustam Bazaar near Gulshan Plaza in South Waziristan, Lower South Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing three people and injuring four others. The primary target appears to have been Malik Tariq Wazir, an influential tribal chief of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe — one of the dominant Pashtun tribal groupings in South Waziristan, constituting more than 60% of the local population. Malik Wazir was known as a key jirga mediator and advocate of peace dialogue in the region. He had been abducted by militants in December 2024 but was released following negotiations by tribal elders. According to District Police Officer Mohammad Tahir Shah Wazir, unidentified militants planted the explosive device near Gulshan Plaza during the night, which detonated as Malik Tariq's vehicle passed through the marketplace in the morning hours.
