Kohat Police Lines Mosque Bombing Death Toll Rises to 31 as 22-Hour Clearance Operation Ends, All 8 Attackers Killed

A vehicle-borne IED detonated at the entrance of a mosque inside the Kohat Police Lines compound in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during Friday prayers on September 18, 2026, followed by roughly eight gunmen — including a suicide bomber and a sniper — storming the compound and taking up positions in the Special Branch building, exchanging fire with police through the night. Pakistani security forces (Kohat Police, Elite Force, CTD and Pakistan Army units, with bomb disposal teams) ended the clearance operation after a continuous 22-hour engagement on September 19, killing all eight attackers. KP Police confirmed the final toll rose to 31 dead — 16 police officers, 7 civilians and the 8 attackers — with more than 100 injured (103 per initial reports), 4 in critical condition; among the dead were SP Traffic Akbar Shinwari and Dr. Israel Orakzai, head of the children's department at DHQ Kohat. KP Inspector General Zulfiqar Hamid said forces 'succeeded in completing the operation after fighting the attackers throughout the night.' Ittihad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan — an alliance of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction of TTP, Harakat Inqilab-e-Islami Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Islam formed in April 2025 — claimed responsibility, after the main TTP denied involvement. Afghanistan's Taliban Foreign Ministry, via spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi, condemned the mosque assault as 'unjustifiable' and offered condolences. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack.
